Quick answers about who makes what
Who owns Maytag? Whirlpool Corporation, since March 31, 2006. Who makes GE appliances? GE Appliances, a Haier company, since General Electric sold the business in June 2016. Who makes Frigidaire? Electrolux, which has owned the brand since 1986. Who makes Kenmore appliances? Other manufacturers, identified by the prefix of the model number, mainly Whirlpool, Frigidaire, LG and Samsung.
Why the maker matters more than the badge
Appliances built on the same platform share parts, fault codes and service manuals. A Maytag washer from the Whirlpool era and a Whirlpool washer of the same type can use the same drain pump and door lock; a Kenmore with a 110 prefix is a Whirlpool machine; a Hotpoint range comes from GE Appliances. For a repair that means the right part is easier to find, prices are closer to the common-brand end of the range, and a technician familiar with one platform knows its twins.
It also works the other way. Brands with fewer models in circulation, or high-end lines with brand-specific electronics, tend to cost more to fix. Fixr's brand tables show that spread: for washers, Kenmore at $100 to $300 against Speed Queen at $325 to $600. The appliance repair cost page has the full ranges.
Warranties, recalls and independent repair
- Recall first. Several large recalls in recent years involved ranges, cooktops and laundry from Samsung, LG, GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool. A recalled unit is handled by the manufacturer.
- Warranty second. Under the original warranty, covered repairs go through the manufacturer's service network, so start there with the serial number.
- Independent repair after that. Federal warranty law generally does not let a manufacturer make coverage depend on its own parts or service, and outside the warranty any qualified company can do the work.
Brand pages
Each page covers what is specific to that brand for refrigerators, laundry, dishwashers, ranges and freezers: fault codes from its own manuals, recalls, litigation that shaped its machines, and typical repair prices.

Finding the model and serial number
Every repair starts with the label. It usually sits inside a dryer's door opening, around a washer's lid or door frame or on its back, behind a range's storage drawer or on the oven door frame, and inside a freezer's lid or on an inner wall. For a refrigerator or a dishwasher, the owner's manual shows where the label sits on your model. The model number tells the technician which platform and which parts; the serial number usually encodes the build date and decides whether a recall applies.
Questions people ask next
Does using an independent repair shop void a manufacturer warranty?
Not in itself. The FTC explains that the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act generally prevents a warrantor from requiring its own parts or service as a condition of coverage, and its 2021 Nixing the Fix report says the law bars using warranty access to obstruct independent repair. Warranty work itself, though, is done through the manufacturer.
Which brands does this line connect calls for?
Refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, ovens, cooktops and freezers of any common brand, including those on this page, are handled by the independent companies that answer. Say the brand and read the model number from the label when you call.
Why do two brands have the same part number?
Because the same company built both. Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and many Kenmore models share platforms; GE and Hotpoint come from the same maker. Shared parts make repairs easier to source and usually quicker.
