Which brands Whirlpool makes
In its annual report for fiscal 2025, Whirlpool lists the brands it markets in the United States and Canada as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, InSinkErator, JennAir, affresh, Swash, everydrop and Gladiator. Maytag joined on March 31, 2006, when Whirlpool completed its acquisition for about $1.9 billion and took on about $973 million of Maytag's debt; that deal also brought Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef and Amana. For owners, the practical point is that a Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid of the same type and era often shares parts, codes and service data.

The front-load washer mold settlement
Whirlpool began making front-load washers in 2001, and Sears sold the same machines under its own brand from 2005. Owners later sued over mold and odor, the case that became In re: Whirlpool Corp. Front-Loading Washer Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2001) in the Northern District of Ohio. A bellwether trial in October 2014 ended in a verdict for Whirlpool; the parties then settled, and the court gave final approval on September 23, 2016. Owners who had mold or persistent odor within five years could choose $50, a 20 percent rebate on certain new machines, or up to $500 of documented costs. The practical lesson still applies to any front-loader: leave the door open between loads, wipe the boot and use HE detergent.
The 2019 glass cooktop recall
In August 2019 Whirlpool recalled about 26,300 Whirlpool, KitchenAid and JennAir glass cooktops with touch controls, made from December 2016 to July 2019, because heating elements could turn on by themselves. The remedy was a replacement cooktop. A touch-control cooktop that switches on unasked should not be used until its model number has been checked.

Warranty, then any qualified shop
Whirlpool's general limited warranty runs one year for parts and labor, with longer coverage on certain components of some products, and warranty service is performed by Whirlpool's own designated providers. One of those longer terms matters for fridges: in years two through five, the general warranty covers parts and labor on the sealed refrigeration system of French-door bottom-mount and side-by-side refrigerators, meaning the compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer and connecting tubing. So the first call for a machine still under warranty goes to Whirlpool. After that, independent companies repair Whirlpool-built appliances every day with the same parts.

Is a Whirlpool control board worth replacing?
On a machine well within its expected life, often yes, but only after the technician has ruled out the cheaper parts that produce the same symptoms: door and lid locks, switches, the pump and the wiring harness. Fixr puts a washer control board at $250 to $400 with labor.
Do Maytag and KitchenAid use the same parts as Whirlpool?
Many do. Whirlpool Corporation owns both brands and shares platforms across them, which is why a Maytag or KitchenAid is often repaired with the same parts and procedures as a Whirlpool model of the same type and era. The model number settles it.
What does Sud or Sd mean on a Whirlpool washer?
Too many suds. Whirlpool says the washer adds rinses on its own to deal with it, and the first thing to change is the detergent: use HE detergent in the measured amount.
