Fixr's appliance-specific national guides. Its general guide gives different ranges for some rows (refrigerators $200–$500, washers $150–$300, freezers $100–$300); we show the more detailed guide for each appliance.
Where the money goes
Every repair bill has three parts: the visit, the labor and the part. The visit covers the drive and the diagnosis, and it is charged even if you decide not to repair. Labor is billed by the hour or folded into a flat price for the job. The part is whatever failed, from a knob to a compressor.
| Line on the bill | National figures |
|---|---|
| Visit to assess the problem | $50–$100 (general guide); refrigerators $70–$120, applied to the first hour; dishwashers $50–$75, deducted if repaired; dryers $50–$80; freezers $45–$150 plus a possible $50–$100 diagnostic fee |
| Travel outside the service area | $25–$100; some companies charge about $2 a mile |
| Labor | $50–$150 an hour in general; up to $200 on ovens and freezers; $100–$250 on refrigerators |
| After hours | about 50% more, $40–$110; holidays can run double |

The repairs at the top of each range
A few parts account for most of the big bills. When a quote lands here, it is worth checking the appliance's age before agreeing.
| Appliance | Costly repair | Parts and labor |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | sealed system; compressor; control board | $800–$1,200; $500–$1,000; $500–$1,000 |
| Washer | drum; motor; control board | $350–$550; $300–$500; $250–$400 |
| Dryer | drum; motor | $300–$450; $250–$450 |
| Dishwasher | motor; control panel; door | $400–$600; $200–$500; $150–$600 |
| Oven | control board; door | $200–$600; $150–$600 |
| Gas stove | gas leak repair; cooktop replacement | $200–$750; $200–$1,000 |
| Freezer | compressor; control board | $250–$650; $300–$650 |

Does the brand change the price?
Somewhat, mostly through parts. Fixr's brand tables show common, widely stocked brands at the lower end and specialist or high-end brands at the upper end. For washers, Kenmore runs $100 to $300 and Speed Queen $325 to $600; for dryers, Crosley, Frigidaire and Kenmore run $100 to $200 and Speed Queen $315 to $600; for freezers, GE runs $50 to $200 and Samsung $200 to $650; for refrigerators, Whirlpool and LG run $50 to $400 and Samsung $250 to $1,000. The reasons are parts availability and design: a model built on a platform used by several brands has more parts in circulation. The appliance brands page shows who builds what.
Ways to keep the bill reasonable
- Check for a recall and for warranty coverage before paying for anything. Recalled units get a manufacturer remedy.
- Ask on the phone what the visit costs and whether it is credited toward the repair.
- Give the model number and a clear symptom so the likely part comes on the first trip.
- Ask for the price in writing before the work starts, and what the warranty is on the part and the labor.
- For a big repair on an old appliance, compare it with a new one using the repair or replace numbers.
Why this line does not quote prices
Compare Appliance Repair is a phone referral line. We do not set prices or do repairs: the independent company that answers your call does both. The national figures on these pages come from Fixr's published cost guides, with the date each guide was last updated, and are here to tell you whether a quote is in the usual range, not to replace one.
Questions people ask next
Why do two companies quote such different prices for the same job?
Part sourcing, the labor rate, how far they drive and whether they price by the hour or by the job all differ. A model-specific part ordered from the manufacturer costs more than a common one on the truck. For anything over a couple of hundred dollars, a second quote is reasonable.
Do repair companies charge more after hours or on holidays?
Many do. Fixr reports after-hours calls running about 50 percent more ($40 to $110) and holiday calls sometimes double ($50 to $150), with some companies using a flat after-hours rate of $50 to $200 instead.
Is the price quoted on the phone final?
Treat it as a range. The technician can only price the job after testing parts and reading the model number. Ask for the full price in writing, part and labor, before any work starts.
