About this line: what it does and what it doesn't

Compare Appliance Repair connects callers with independent appliance repair companies. We don't repair anything, send anyone to your home or set any price: the company that picks up does all three, under its own name.

(866) 227-5072

An independent repair company that covers your ZIP code answers; this line only connects the call. Have the appliance type, the brand and the model number from the tag ready.

The route a call takes

Dialing the number puts you through a call-routing service. It identifies the area you need help in, sometimes by asking for your ZIP code, and rings a participating repair company that works there and is available. That company introduces itself, hears the problem and, if it can help, books a visit with you directly. From that moment the job, the schedule and the invoice are a matter between you and the company; nobody from this site listens in or follows up.

Appliances the line handles

HandledNot handled here
refrigerators, including their ice makers and water dispensersmicrowaves
washers and dryers, including stacked and compact unitsgarbage disposals
built-in and portable dishwasherswine coolers and bar ice machines
gas, electric and dual-fuel ranges, wall ovens, cooktopswater heaters and air conditioners
chest and upright freezersrestaurant and commercial equipment

The line is for appliances in homes and apartments. Renting? The landlord usually owns the appliances and arranges their repair.

Where the money comes from

The site is funded by the repair businesses in the routing network, which pay for the phone calls that reach them. Their prices are their own. We see none of what you pay for a repair and have no influence over it, which is also why no page here promises a price, an arrival time or a particular company.

Checks worth making on any company

Nobody on our side vets, grades or licenses the businesses that answer. A few minutes of checking is yours to do:

  1. State rules. Some states regulate appliance repair. California, for one, requires repair dealers to register with its Bureau of Household Goods and Services; its notice lists refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers and ranges, and the bureau runs a license search.
  2. Refrigerant. Federal EPA rules reserve work that opens the sealed system of a fridge or freezer for technicians holding Section 608 certification, unless the refrigerant is one EPA has exempted, such as isobutane.
  3. Coverage. Ask about liability insurance, particularly for gas connections and for moving heavy machines.
  4. Paperwork. Before work starts, get the diagnosis, parts, labor, total and repair warranty on paper or by email.

Where the numbers in the guides come from

  • Prices: Fixr's national cost guides, each with its last-updated date.
  • Recalls: Consumer Product Safety Commission notices.
  • Standards and efficiency: the Department of Energy, the Code of Federal Regulations, ENERGY STAR and the Energy Information Administration.
  • Life expectancy: the 2007 National Association of Home Builders study.
  • Fault codes: each manufacturer's own support pages.
  • Safety: NFPA, USDA, FDA, EPA, FTC, PHMSA and the International Residential Code.

None of the guides was written by a working appliance technician, and none replaces one standing at your machine with a meter. They exist to help you describe a fault clearly, spot a quote that is out of line, and stay on the safe side of the checks you do yourself.

Things deliberately left out

There are no ratings, reviews or testimonials on this site, and no photos of staff or of jobs. The line drawings were made for these pages to show where parts sit inside each appliance. Brand names appear only to describe the machines people own.

Reporting a mistake

Found an error? Email admin@compareappliancerepair.com with the page and a source for the correct figure, and the page will be fixed and its review date updated. Questions about a repair, a bill or a repair warranty belong with the company that did the work.

Common questions about the line

Is this the manufacturer’s service line?

No. There is no connection between this site and Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, Kenmore or any other maker. For work covered by a factory warranty, go to the manufacturer; for everything else, the line reaches an independent company near you.

What if the call does not connect?

Then no participating company in your area was taking calls at that moment. Try again later, or phone a local appliance repair business you find another way.

Can I pick which company answers?

Not through this number: the routing chooses a company that covers your ZIP code. If you already have a company you trust, you can always call it directly instead.
