Maytag before and after 2006
Maytag was an independent company with about $4.9 billion in net sales in 2005. Whirlpool completed its purchase on March 31, 2006, for an aggregate price of about $1.9 billion plus about $973 million of assumed debt, and the deal also brought in Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef and Amana. Since then Maytag has been one of Whirlpool's brands. For repair purposes that splits Maytag appliances into two groups: machines designed under Maytag before the merger, and later models built on Whirlpool platforms. The model number, and the year it encodes, tells a technician which group yours is in.
What Whirlpool platforms mean for a Maytag repair
A newer Maytag washer or dryer often uses the same drain pump, door lock, control, belt or heating element as a Whirlpool model of the same type, and it may display the same style of fault codes, such as F8 E1 for slow fill, F9 E1 for a long drain or Sud for too much detergent. That makes parts easy to find and the repair familiar to most technicians. The owner's manual confirms which codes your model uses; the Whirlpool appliance repair page lists what those codes mean.
The Neptune front-loaders
Maytag's Neptune front-loaders date from the late 1990s. Owners filed class actions over mold and odor and over failures of door latches and control boards, and a settlement was announced in 2004; Maytag's own annual report for that year recorded $22.6 million in front-load washer litigation charges. Any original Neptune still running is far past the ten-year expected life of a washer, and major repairs on it rarely make sense.
Later Maytag front-loaders from the Whirlpool era were added to Whirlpool's own front-load settlement, approved in September 2016, as machines mechanically identical to the Whirlpool and Kenmore washers in that case.

Maytag dryers and ranges
Maytag dryers fail in the familiar dryer places: the thermal fuse and heating element on electric models, the igniter and valve coils on gas models, and belts, rollers and idler pulleys on both. Whirlpool Corporation, since it completed its acquisition of Maytag on March 31, 2006. Whirlpool still lists Maytag among the brands it sells in the United States in its annual report for fiscal 2025.
Are Maytag washers made in the same factories as Whirlpool?
Current Maytag laundry is built by Whirlpool Corporation, and many Maytag models share platforms with Whirlpool machines of the same type. The 2016 front-load washer settlement even added Maytag-branded machines that were mechanically identical to the Whirlpool and Kenmore washers in the case.
Is an old Maytag worth repairing?
An older Maytag top-loader built before the Whirlpool era can still be repairable if parts are available, but a Neptune front-loader or any machine past about ten years with a drum, transmission or control failure is usually a replacement decision. Get the diagnosis and a written quote first.
