Is the display lit or dark?
That one observation splits the problem in two. A washer that won't start but has power (a lit display) means the control has power and is choosing not to run, and it almost always says why with a code or a flashing light. A dark display means power is not reaching the control, or the control has failed. Start with the branch that matches what you see.
Display on, but the cycle won't begin
- Door or lid lock. The drum will not turn until the lock is confirmed. LG shows dE, dE1 or dE2; Samsung groups several door codes (dS, dE, dL and others); Whirlpool front-loaders show F5 E3 for a lock problem and F5 E1 for the door switch, and top-loaders LdL when the lid will not lock.
- Child lock or control lock. LG's CL means the child lock is on; LG says to hold the button for three seconds. Other brands show a lock icon.
- Delay start. A cycle set to start later looks exactly like a dead machine that is counting down.
- No water. Many washers wait to fill before they do anything visible. LG's IE and Whirlpool's F8 E1 or LF mean water is not arriving; both makers say to check that the taps are fully open.
Display dark
- Check the outlet. Plug a lamp into it. Laundry outlets are often on a GFCI that trips with a damp floor.
- Check the breaker for the laundry circuit, and whether anything else on it went dark at the same time.
- Look at the cord and plug for scorch marks. A machine pushed against the wall can crush its own cord.
- Unplug for a full minute, then try again. If it stays dark with good power at the outlet, the fault is inside: a fuse, the power supply on the board, or the board itself.
Clicks, hums and half-starts
Sounds are clues. A washer that won't start and just clicks, over and over, has a lock trying and failing. A steady hum with no movement can be a pump or motor that is jammed or stalled, and it should not be left running because the winding heats up. A start that stops after a few seconds and shows a code is the control reporting a problem it found on its own self-check; write the code down before you reset anything.
What these repairs usually cost
| Part | Parts and labor | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| Lid switch | $85–$160 | top-loader, lid codes, no click |
| Door lock | $110–$200 | door codes, lock cycling |
| Timer (older dial models) | $100–$280 | dial turns, nothing engages |
| Control board | $250–$400 | dark or garbled display with good power |
| Motor | $300–$500 | hum without movement, overload codes |

A control board is the part where the bill varies most by model, and it is also the part most often blamed too early. A good technician checks the lock, the switch and the wiring harness before ordering a board, because a board ordered for a bad lock does not fix anything.
What the technician will want to know
Report whether the display is lit, any code or blinking pattern, what you hear, and whether the washer lost power recently. Read the model and serial number from the tag. For a machine still under its manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer first; for a rental, the landlord.
Questions people ask next
Does unplugging the washer reset it?
Sometimes. LG tells owners to unplug for 10 seconds as a first step for several of its codes, including the door that will not lock, and a power cycle clears a control that froze after a surge. If the same fault returns on the next try, the reset has done all it can.
Why does my washer keep locking and unlocking?
The lock is trying to engage and the control is not getting confirmation back. Something in the latch, a bent door hook, a worn lock or a broken wire in the door hinge area is the usual reason. It is a common door-lock replacement.
Can a power outage break a washer?
A surge when power returns can damage a control board, and that is one of the few times a board fails with no warning. Try the breaker and a 10-second unplug first; if the display stays dark or garbled, the board or its power supply needs testing.
