Washer not draining? Check these four places in order

Water sitting in the drum after the cycle almost always means a blockage somewhere between the tub and the standpipe, or a drain pump that no longer turns. Work from the easy end: the hose, the pump filter, then the pump.

Where the water is supposed to go

At the end of each wash and rinse, the control switches on a small electric drain pump at the bottom of the cabinet. The pump pulls water from the tub sump through a short hose and pushes it up the drain hose, which hooks into a standpipe behind the machine or over the edge of a laundry sink. Front-loaders put a drain pump filter, often called a coin trap, in front of that pump to catch whatever came out of the pockets.

So when a washer won't drain, something in that path is blocked or the pump has stopped. Anything that narrows the path slows the drain, and most control boards give up after a set time and show a code. On many newer models the washer also refuses to move on to the spin until it is sure the tub is empty, which is why a washer that won't drain or spin usually has one problem, not two.

What the drain codes on the display mean

BrandCodeWhat the manufacturer says it means
LGOEthe water cannot drain; check the drain hose for kinks or clogs first
Samsung5C, 5E, nd, SE, SCno drain: water is not leaving at the right speed, or at all
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore (Whirlpool-built)F9 E1long drain time; hose installation, pump filter and door seal are the listed checks

From each maker's own support pages, read September 2026. Codes differ by model, so the owner's manual has the final word.

Four checks, in the order a technician would do them

  1. The drain hose behind the machine. Pull the washer out an inch or two and look for a kink or a flattened section. Hoses get crushed when a machine is pushed back against the wall.
  2. How the hose sits in the standpipe. Whirlpool's own help page for its long-drain code says the hose should go no more than 4.5 inches into the drainpipe, should not be taped or sealed in place, and should leave an air gap. Pushed in too far or sealed tight, it can siphon water back into the tub. The top of the hose also has a height limit, which Whirlpool gives as 96 inches from the bottom of the washer.
  3. The pump filter on a front-loader. Lay down towels, set out a shallow pan, open the small panel at the bottom front and turn the filter cap slowly so the water comes out gradually. Coins, hair ties, lint and a baby sock are the usual finds. Whirlpool also notes small drain holes inside the door seal that can clog.
  4. The pump itself. Start a drain-and-spin and listen at the bottom of the cabinet. A hum with no water moving suggests something jammed in the pump. Silence suggests the pump, its wiring or the signal from the board. Both are technician work from here.

Let hot water cool before opening the filter, and unplug the washer before removing any panel. Top-loaders usually have no filter you can reach; a sock that slipped past the tub goes straight to the pump, and getting it out means taking the machine apart.

When the washer is fine and the house drain is not

A washing machine not draining is not always the machine's fault. If water backs up out of the standpipe or bubbles into the laundry sink while the washer pumps out, the machine is doing its job and the drain line in the wall is slow. That is a plumbing problem, not an appliance repair. The same goes for a floor drain that overflows. An appliance technician can confirm which side the problem is on, but clearing a drain line is for a plumber.

What to tell the company that answers

Note the code, whether the pump hums, and whether you already cleaned the filter. Read the model number from the tag inside the door frame or on the back. If the machine is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Once those are covered, the company that picks up can tell you whether a trip charge applies and bring a pump that fits.

Questions people ask next

How do I get the water out before the technician arrives?

Try a drain-and-spin cycle on its own first. If nothing moves, a front-loader can be emptied through the short drain tube next to the pump filter into a shallow pan, a little at a time. On a top-loader, bail the tub with a container and towel off the bottom. Never open a filter while the water is hot.

Can running it with a blocked filter damage the pump?

It can. A pump that keeps trying to push water past a sock or a clump of lint runs hot and wears its impeller. If the washer shows a drain code twice in a row, stop running cycles and have the filter and pump looked at.

The water drained, but the clothes are still soaking wet. Same problem?

Not quite. Draining and spinning are separate steps, and a washer can finish one and refuse the other. A spin that never starts usually traces to the lid or door lock, an unbalanced load or the drive, which is covered on the page about a washer that will not spin.
