Match the puddle to the part
| Where the water is | Most likely source | What settles it |
|---|---|---|
| Front, under the door | torn or dirty door boot seal, foam escaping | a tear in the boot folds, or suds in the drum |
| Front, bottom corner | pump filter cap not seated | drips right after a filter cleaning |
| Back, near the taps | fill hose washer, cracked inlet hose, inlet valve | wet hose ends, damp wall behind the machine |
| Dispenser drawer | clogged dispenser overflowing | detergent crust, water in the drawer housing |
| Center, underneath the machine | drain pump, sump hose clamp, tub seal | leak mostly during drain or spin |
| Around the standpipe | drain hose pushed too far or house drain slow | water overflowing the pipe, not the washer |
A washing machine leaking only now and then is the hardest to trace. Dry the floor completely, put down paper towels or a flattened cardboard box, and watch one short cycle. Wet paper under a single spot narrows it down faster than any guess.
Timing narrows it further
A leak during fill points to the supply side: hoses, the inlet valve, the dispenser. A leak during drain points to the pump, its hoses and the standpipe. A leak during spin, when the tub is flexing hardest, points to the door boot on a front-loader or to the tub seal behind the drum. A slow drip with the machine off and the taps open is almost always the inlet valve or a hose connection, because that part of the system is under house water pressure all the time.
What to do right now
- Turn off both taps behind the washer. That stops the one source that never shuts off by itself.
- Unplug the machine before mopping around it. Water and a 120-volt outlet near the floor are a bad pair.
- Dry and photograph the spot, the hose ends and the door boot folds. Photos help the technician bring the right part.
- Check the floor beyond the washer. Water that has run under flooring or into a ceiling below needs drying on its own schedule, apart from the appliance repair.
What leak repairs cost
| Repair | Parts and labor |
|---|---|
| Typical leak call overall | $75–$200 |
| Drain hose | $95–$170 |
| Water inlet valve | $95–$190 |
| Bearings (a failing tub seal is usually replaced with them) | $150–$225 |
| Door boot gasket | $230–$300 |
| Drain pump | $300–$400 |

Leaks that are warning you about something else
Rust-colored water or grinding during spin alongside a leak usually means the tub seal has failed and water has reached the rear bearings. That repair is labor-heavy, and on a machine past ten years old it is where many owners compare the bill with a replacement. Samsung also lists a water level or leakage code (LE or LC on many models) that trips when moisture reaches a sensor where it does not belong; Samsung says finding and fixing the leak clears it.
When you phone about a leak
Say where the water appears and during which part of the cycle, how long the machine has leaked, and whether the taps are now off. Give the model number from the tag, and say if the washer is a stacked pair: that changes how the technician gets to the back.
Questions people ask next
How often should the fill hoses be replaced?
Whirlpool’s product help says fill hoses should be replaced every five years. Rubber hoses harden and crack from the inside, so a hose that looks fine can still burst. Braided stainless hoses hold up better but still carry a replacement date.
Why does it leak only when I use a lot of detergent?
Too much soap, or regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine, makes foam that climbs out through the door boot or the dispenser. Whirlpool treats excess suds as its own code and tells owners to switch to HE detergent. Measure by the line on the cap, not by eye.
Is a small drip under a front-loader serious?
Often it is the pump filter cap, which was not screwed back fully after cleaning, and that takes a minute to fix. A drip that keeps coming back, or one that appears only during the spin, is more likely a tub or pump seal, and those get worse with every load.
