What has to be true before the drum will spin
When a washer won't spin, one of three checks has usually failed. A modern washer confirms all three before it ramps up: the tub is empty, the door or lid is locked, and the load is spread evenly enough to spin without shaking the cabinet apart. Only then does the motor drive the drum to full speed, through a belt, a coupling or directly, depending on the design. A failure at any of those checks stops the cycle with wet clothes, and on most machines a code tells you which check failed.
Codes that point at the reason
| Reason | LG | Samsung | Whirlpool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unbalanced load | UE, uE | Ub, UE, U6, Ur | varies by model |
| Door or lid will not lock | dE, dE1, dE2 | dS, dE, dL, d5 | LdL (top-load), F5 E3 (front-load) |
| Water still in the tub | OE | 5C, 5E, nd | F9 E1 |
| Motor stalled or overloaded | LE | varies by model | varies by model |
Meanings from LG, Samsung and Whirlpool support pages, read September 2026. On some Samsung models dC means a door error, on others an unbalanced load.
If the display shows a drain code, the spin was never going to start. Fix the drain first: the washer not draining checklist starts with the hose and the pump filter.
Checks that take five minutes
- Rearrange the load. Pull out anything bulky, spread the rest, then run a drain-and-spin alone.
- Close the door or lid firmly and listen. Most locks click when they engage. No click, or a click followed by an unlock, points at the lock or the latch.
- Look at the feet. A washer that rocks when you press a front corner cannot spin cleanly. Level it and tighten the lock nuts on the feet.
- New front-loader? Check that the shipping bolts on the back were removed at installation. A machine run with them in place shakes hard and may refuse to spin.
- Let it rest. LG tells owners to leave a washer showing its motor-overload code alone for 30 minutes to cool before trying again.
What a technician looks at when the easy checks pass
A washing machine not spinning after all of that points to the drive. The next suspects depend on how the drum is driven. Belt-drive machines slip or snap a belt. Older direct-drive top-loaders use a motor coupling with small plastic and rubber parts that wear, leaving shreds under the machine. Direct-drive front-loaders have no belt, so the motor, its rotor position sensor or the control board carries the blame. Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods let the tub bang the cabinet, and the control cuts the spin to protect itself.
| Part | Typical sign | Parts and labor |
|---|---|---|
| Lid switch or lid lock | fills and agitates, never spins; no click | $85–$160 |
| Door lock | door codes, lock clicks on and off | $110–$200 |
| Motor coupling | motor hums, tub stays still, shreds under the washer | $85–$160 |
| Drive belt | burning-rubber smell, motor spins but the drum does not | $120–$175 |
| Shock absorbers | banging, walking, spin cut short | $150–$300 |
| Clutch or transmission | older agitator models; slow or no spin | $200–$350 |
| Motor | no movement at all, overload codes | $300–$500 |

Shaking is a warning, not a nuisance
A washer that thumps or walks during spin is putting load on its suspension, its hoses and whatever it is walking toward. In November 2016 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Samsung's recall of about 2.8 million top-load washers sold from March 2011 to November 2016, after reports that the top could detach from the cabinet during use. If you own a Samsung top-loader from those years, check the recall before paying for a spin repair: a recalled unit gets a manufacturer remedy, and details are on the Samsung appliance repair page.
Details that get the right part on the truck
Tell the company what you hear when the spin should start (click, hum, silence or banging), any code, and whether the drum turns freely by hand with the machine unplugged. Have the model number from the tag ready so the right lock or belt comes on the first visit.
Questions people ask next
Can I wring the load out another way until it is fixed?
Run a drain-and-spin by itself with the load spread evenly. If the drum still will not turn fast, take the clothes out rather than running full cycles again: a machine that keeps starting against a fault can overheat its motor or lock.
Why does a small load cause an unbalanced code?
A single towel or one pair of jeans lumps to one side of the drum. LG tells owners that a load that is too small is the first thing to check when its washers show the unbalanced code. Add two or three similar items so the weight spreads around.
Is a washer that shakes violently safe to run?
Stop it. Violent shaking means the load is lopsided or the suspension is worn, and a machine that walks can pull on its hoses and cord. Samsung recalled about 2.8 million top-loaders in 2016 because the top could detach during heavy vibration, so check whether yours was one of them.
