Same-day repair

Same day appliance repair: what's realistic today

Same-day service depends on which independent companies cover your ZIP code and how full their schedules are, so it is never guaranteed. When a technician can come the same day, common parts are often on the truck; model-specific boards usually have to be ordered.

What is often fixed on the first visit

People look for emergency appliance repair or appliance repair same day when a machine fails at the worst moment. Whether it can happen depends less on the fault than on the part: a common part on the truck means one visit.

Often on the truckOften ordered for your model
dryer belts, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, door switcheselectronic control boards
gas oven and dryer igniters, gas valve coilsmodel-specific door locks and displays
common heating elements, oven sensorsglass cooktop tops, induction power boards
washer lid switches, drain hoses, some drain pumpsdrums, bearings, transmissions
refrigerator and freezer start relays, thermostats, some fan motorscompressors and sealed-system parts
dishwasher inlet valves, drain hoses, door gasketsdishwasher control panels, motors, door ice maker assemblies on fridges

What a truck carries varies by company. Giving the model number when you call is the single thing that most improves the odds of a one-visit repair.

Problems that should not wait for an appointment

  • Gas smell near a range, oven or dryer. Don't use switches, matches or a phone inside; leave, and call 911 from a neighbor's house or well away from yours. The appliance repair comes after the gas is dealt with.
  • A dryer that smells scorched or smokes. Stop it and unplug it. Lint was the item first ignited in more dryer fires than anything else in NFPA's national figures.
  • A washer leaking across the floor. Turn off both taps behind it and unplug it before mopping.
  • A burner or element that will not turn off. Switch the range off at the breaker and check the model against recent recalls.
  • A refrigerator warming up. Keep the doors shut. The FDA says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours, and that perishables such as meat, milk, eggs and leftovers should be discarded after 4 hours or more above 40°F.
  • A dishwasher leaking under the counter. Close the water valve under the sink that feeds it and switch off its power before pulling the kick plate.
  • A freezer warming up. Keep it shut: the USDA says a full freezer holds its temperature about 48 hours without power (24 if half full) with the door closed.

How to improve the odds of a visit today

  1. Call early. Morning calls fit into the day's route more easily than late-afternoon ones.
  2. Have the details ready: appliance, brand, model number, the symptom in one sentence and any code on the display.
  3. Be flexible on the window. A wide arrival window is easier to fill than a fixed hour.
  4. Clear the way. Make room around the appliance and say if it is stacked, built in or in a tight closet.

While you wait

A few things buy time without risk. Run a washer that will not drain on drain-and-spin only, or leave it until the visit. Hang laundry instead of running a dryer that smells hot. Cook on the burners if only the oven has failed and nothing smells of gas. Move the most valuable food out of a warming fridge or freezer if you have somewhere cold to put it, such as a cooler with ice. Hand-wash dishes rather than running a dishwasher that leaks. The pages on a refrigerator not cooling, a washer leaking, a freezer not freezing and a gas stove burner that won't light go further for each of those.

Questions people ask next

Is a same-day visit guaranteed?

No. Whether a technician can come today depends on which independent companies serve your ZIP code, how full their schedules are and what time you call. The availability note at the foot of this page applies to every request.

Does a same-day visit cost more?

Sometimes. Fixr reports that emergency visits can add $25 to $75 to the service call, that after-hours calls run about 50 percent more ($40 to $110), and that some companies charge a flat after-hours rate of $50 to $200. Ask before you book.

What happens if the part is not on the truck?

The technician diagnoses the fault, orders the part and returns. Ask whether the return visit carries another charge, and whether there is anything safe to do in the meantime, such as running a washer on drain-and-spin only.
