Freezer not freezing: why it runs but stays warm

First find out whether the compressor is running. If it runs but the food softens, look at airflow over the condenser, the door or lid seal and, on automatic-defrost models, the evaporator fan. If it only clicks or stays silent, the start relay, thermostat or compressor is the problem.

Three states, three different problems

What you hear and feelWhere to look
Compressor hums steadily, cabinet not cold enoughdirty condenser, blocked vents, door seal, evaporator fan (automatic-defrost), low refrigerant
A click every few minutes, then quietstart relay or overload on the compressor, or the compressor itself
Completely silent, light may still workthermostat or control, wiring, compressor that will not start

A freezer not cold enough but humming along is the first row; a chest freezer not cold and silent is the third. The compressor is the small tank-shaped unit at the bottom back of an upright, or in a compartment at one end of a chest freezer. Put your hand near it: running compressors are warm and hum.

Checks that cost nothing

  1. Setting. Someone may have turned the dial. Most freezers reach 0°F on a middle setting.
  2. Door or lid. Close it on a dollar bill in several spots; if the bill slides out easily, the gasket is not sealing. Overfilled chests often hold the lid slightly open.
  3. Breathing room. Clear boxes and bags away from the back and sides. An upright with coils at the back needs a few inches of space; a chest with condenser tubing in its walls needs clear space along its sides.
  4. Condenser coils. On models with exposed coils, unplug and vacuum them. Dust on the coils makes the compressor run long and still fall short.
  5. Room temperature. Check the manual's room temperature range. A freezer in a very hot or unheated garage can fall outside it.

Automatic-defrost uprights: the fan and the frost

On an automatic-defrost upright, cold is made behind the back panel and blown into the cabinet by an evaporator fan. If the fan stops, the coil gets cold but the air around the food does not. If the defrost system fails, frost chokes the coil and the fan cannot move air through it. A thick layer of frost on the back panel, or a fan you cannot hear when the door switch is pressed, points there. The freezer frost buildup page covers that failure in detail.

What these repairs cost

RepairParts and labor
Thermostat$75–$300
Start relay$75–$300
Fan$100–$300
Door or lid seal$150–$500
Regassing (after a leak repair)$200–$500
Compressor$250–$650

Fixr national freezer guide, updated August 29, 2025. Its range for a freezer that is "not cold enough" runs from $50 to $500, which reflects how different a coil cleaning is from a compressor.

Sealed-system faults and the age question

If the compressor runs constantly, the condenser is clean, the fan works and the cabinet still will not get cold, the refrigerant circuit is the remaining suspect: a leak, a restriction or a compressor that no longer pumps. Opening that circuit calls for EPA Section 608 certification unless the refrigerant is an exempted one such as isobutane, and the work sits at the top of the price range. Fixr's advice is to repair a freezer under ten years old if the bill is under half the price of a new one; replacement there runs $600 to $1,150.

Before the technician arrives

Keep the door closed, move the most valuable food if you can, and write down the temperature reading with the time. Say whether it is a chest or upright, how old it is and what you hear. The model number is on a label inside the lid or on an inner side wall.

Questions people ask next

What temperature should a freezer hold?

0°F or colder. That is the food-safety target the FDA gives for freezers, and most freezers are set to reach it on the middle setting. Measure with a thermometer between packages, not in the door.

The freezer clicks every few minutes and never really runs. What is that?

That is the compressor trying to start and its overload cutting it off. The start relay, the overload or the compressor itself is at fault, and a technician can tell which with a meter. Unplug it between attempts if food is not at risk, because repeated tries heat the compressor.

Can a freezer be recharged with refrigerant?

Only after the leak is found and repaired, and, for most refrigerants, only by a technician with EPA Section 608 certification; isobutane (R-600a) is one of the exempted ones. Adding refrigerant to a leaking system just delays the next failure. On an older freezer, a leak in the sealed system is often the point where replacement makes more sense.
