Refrigerator leaking water: finding the source first

A fridge has two separate water systems, and a leak comes from one of them. Melt from the defrost cycle runs through a drain to a pan underneath; water for the ice maker and dispenser comes in through a supply line and an inlet valve. Where the water appears points to which one failed.

Where is the water?

Where you see itMost likely source
Under the crisper drawers, or ice on the freezer floorblocked or frozen defrost drain
Floor in front, fridge has no ice makerdrain pan cracked, out of place or overflowing; blocked drain
Floor in front or behind, fridge has ice or watersupply line, water inlet valve, filter housing
Under the door dispenserdispenser line or tube, ice maker overfilling
Beads of water on shelves and wallsdoor gasket not sealing, door left ajar, humid room

Dry the floor, then lay a strip of paper towel along the front and sides of the fridge for an hour. The wet spot shows whether the water comes from the front, the side or the back.

A blocked defrost drain

Several times a day the defrost heater melts the frost off the evaporator coil, and the water runs through a small opening at the back of the freezer, down a tube, into the pan. Food crumbs, a bit of packaging or ice can close that opening. The water then has nowhere to go: it freezes into a sheet on the freezer floor or runs into the fresh-food section and pools under the crisper drawers. That is the classic case of a fridge leaking water inside.

The usual fix is to melt any ice in the drain and flush it with warm water; on many models the defrost drain opening is visible once the freezer's back panel or bottom shelf is removed. If the drain keeps refreezing, the drain heater or strap on some models, or the defrost system itself, needs attention. Fixr lists leaks inside the fridge at $60 to $250.

The drain pan underneath

The drain pan sits over the compressor, usually behind the kick plate at the bottom front, so the compressor's heat evaporates the water. A pan that has cracked, slid out of place or filled faster than it evaporates spills onto the floor. Pans cost little as parts but can be awkward to reach; Fixr lists drip pan replacement at $50 to $200 with labor.

Supply line, water inlet valve and filter

If the fridge has an ice maker or a water dispenser, a small line brings water from the house, usually to a water inlet valve at the bottom back of the cabinet. From there tubes run to the ice maker, the filter and the dispenser. Common leak points are:

  • The line itself. Plastic lines crack and can be kinked when the fridge is pushed back; compression fittings loosen.
  • The water inlet valve. A cracked valve body or a loose connection drips at the back, often only while the ice maker fills.
  • The filter. A filter that is not fully seated, is the wrong type, or sits in a cracked housing leaks where it enters the cabinet or grille.
  • The ice maker. A valve that does not close fully overfills the mold, and the extra water freezes or drips into the bin and the dispenser chute.

Fixr's ice maker guide lists valve repairs at $75 to $125, line repairs at $100 to $200 and a flooding ice maker at $75 to $175. If the leak starts at the back only when the ice maker is filling, the valve or the fill connection is the prime suspect.

Leaks linked to door ice makers

Leaks under the crisper trays were one of the complaints in a proposed class action filed in 2017 against Samsung over the ice makers built into the doors of some of its refrigerators. The case, Bianchi v. Samsung Electronics America, was dismissed, and certain owners accepted individual settlement offers; no class-wide settlement was reported. It is still a useful clue: on a fridge with an in-door ice maker, water in the fresh-food section can come from the ice compartment rather than the defrost drain. The Samsung page has the details.

What these leaks cost to fix

Problem or partParts and labor
Drip pan$50–$200
Leaking water underneath$60–$200
Leaking water inside$60–$250
Ice maker valve$75–$125
Ice maker water line$100–$200
Water dispenser$170–$500

Before the technician comes

  1. Stop the supply if you cannot find the source. Close the valve on the line and switch the ice maker off.
  2. Protect the floor. Keep towels down; a slow leak under a fridge can go unseen for weeks, and wood or laminate flooring swells.
  3. Note when it leaks. Only after the ice maker fills, all the time, or after the freezer has been defrosting: that timing narrows the cause.
  4. Find the model number. The technician will want it to bring the right valve, pan or line.

If the fridge is also warming, the defrost system may be the common cause; the refrigerator not cooling page walks through it. An ice maker that leaks and makes little ice is covered on the ice maker page.

Questions people ask next

Why is there water under the crisper drawers?

Almost always a blocked defrost drain. Melt from the freezer coil is meant to run through a drain to a pan underneath; when the drain freezes or clogs with food debris, the water overflows inside the cabinet and collects under the drawers. Fixr puts inside leaks at $60 to $250.

Should I turn off the water to the fridge?

If water is spreading on the floor and you do not know the source, yes. Close the shut-off valve on the supply line, often under the kitchen sink or behind the fridge, and put the ice maker switch in the off position. A leak from the drain system will slow down; a supply leak will stop.

Can a new water filter cause a leak?

Yes, if it is not fully seated or is the wrong filter for the housing. Take it out, check the O-rings and put it back in firmly. A cracked filter housing has to be replaced as a part.
